The learning process is different and unique for all students; however, learning can be through visuals, auditory, or kinesthetic styles. Thus, what impacts student learning varies depending on the student. Some of the essential factors that impact student learning can be the instructor, the interest levels in class, the ability to apply the skills learned, the assignments and activities given, and even the assigned readings (Roberts, 2014). Student learning is simply the acquisition of knowledge and skills, retention, and abilities to apply knowledge in the world. What impacts this learning among students varies as described above. It is the responsibility of the teacher or instructor to understand each student, their acquired knowledge, and describe ways that knowledge can structure their growth and development.
Besides, teachers can influence or eve affect the learning process of students. For instance, in a study conducted among 114 students in a university institution, 52% agree that the instructor or professor is the most crucial factor that influences student learning, among other factors such as interest levels, assigned readings, and the ability to apply the learned skills and knowledge (Mamorella, 2013). This shows that the mode and approach of teaching adopted by an instructor higher shapes student learning positively or negatively. Teaching requires inspiration, demonstration, explaining, and telling. An instructor with these qualities profoundly impacts student learning positively.
Student assessments are essential in the successful learning process as they help instructors understand and evaluate the student’s ability to acquire the skills and knowledge, retain them, and effectively transfer into the real world. Assessments are among the most critical factors that impact student learning, and instructors must address the personal impact of assessment practices on students and their learning process (Shelleyann Scott, 2014). Fairness and equity in student assessments mean that the assessment tools and techniques incorporated to evaluate the student’s ability to acquire, retain, and transfer knowledge are all around. Learning and excelling is different among students. Some thrive in cognitive learning than in physical aspects (Price, 2015). Therefore, a fair and equitable assessment practice would incorporate both formal and informal assessments such as cognitive tests, projects that require physical differences, class and group participation, and transfer of knowledge.
This type of assessment evaluates a student’s capabilities all round
from acquisition, listening, memory retention, and ability to use and transfer
the knowledge. Discerning whether learning goals are being met is determined
while planning the CP, whereby you use the learning objectives, expectations,
and desired results to compare against the students’ assessment results (UNESCO, 2017). The all-round
student assessment results are prove and evidence of whether the learning
objectives, expectations, and desired results are being met or not. Therefore,
using the “all-round” assessment techniques will easily determine the meeting
of the learning objectives since a variety of assessment methods gathers
adequate evidence.
